Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
In Dubious Battle by John Steinbeck is a powerful and uncompromising novel that examines collective struggle, moral ambiguity, and the human cost of social conflict. Published in 1936, the book draws inspiration from the labor movements and agricultural strikes of the Great Depression era in the United States. The story follows Jim Nolan, a young drifter who becomes involved in a strike organized by migrant fruit workers in California. Recruited by experienced labor organizer Mac McLeod, Jim is drawn into a volatile situation where idealism, desperation, and violence collide. As the strike escalates, individual lives are increasingly subsumed by the demands and momentum of the collective cause. Steinbeck portrays the strike not as a simple battle between good and evil, but as a complex social force shaped by fear, manipulation, solidarity, and sacrifice. The novel explores how leadership, propaganda, and group psychology influence behavior, often blurring the line between moral purpose and destructive fanaticism. Written in a stark, restrained style, In Dubious Battle reflects Steinbeck’s deep engagement with social injustice and his concern for the dignity of working people. The title, taken from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, underscores the epic and tragic dimensions of the conflict. In Dubious Battle remains a significant work of American social fiction, offering a sobering reflection on power, ideology, and the fragile humanity of those caught in the struggle for justice and survival.
