C’est en 1905, soit deux ans avant la mort de Huysmans, que paraissent Trois Primitifs: Les Grünewald du Musée de Colmar. Le Maître de Flémalle et la Florentine du Musée de Francfort-sur-le-Mein. Le texte intégral, non réédité depuis près de quarante ans, est composé de deux parties sensiblement équivalentes: d’abord la description du Retable d’Issenheim de Mathias Grünewald exposé au musée Unterlinden de Colmar, puis celle de deux autres œuvres découvertes au Musée Staedel de Francfort-sur-le-Mein: un buste anonyme d’une jeune fille de l’École Florentine du XVe siècle et La Madone allaitant l’Enfant Jésus du maître de Flémalle.
