Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
On the banks of the Seine, Paris rises as both a monument of grandeur and a city of sorrow, inequality, and spiritual hunger. There, Godefroid, a young man worn down by disappointment, is shaken by a priest's simple compassion for a desperate laborer, and that fleeting scene opens a crack in his long discontent. Born to ambitious parents, educated among wealthier boys, and thwarted in law, literature, politics, and journalism, he has grown into a man of resentment, inadequacy, and wasted promise. After a modest inheritance, failed ambitions, a disastrous marriage rejection, and his mother's death leave him nearly ruined, he seeks a quiet, inexpensive refuge. Instead, he is led into the shadowed house of Madame de la Chanterie near Notre-Dame, a place of old silence, faded grandeur, and near-monastic severity. There he encounters a hidden moral world—and the haunting documents of Henriette Lechantre de la Chanterie, whose tragic history unfolds in rebellion, betrayal, royalist intrigue, and political violence. As Godefroid follows the story toward judgment, mercy, and possible pardon, he begins to glimpse the possibility of redemption for both Henriette and himself. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
