Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
Sons of the Soil opens with Balzac's fierce meditation on rural France, where land, property, and power are locked in a dangerous struggle after the Revolution. At the center stands Les Aigues, a Burgundian estate rendered in lush, almost ecstatic detail: avenues, brooks, meadows, ancient elms, walls, gates, and half-wild parks create an Arcadian beauty haunted by solitude, labor, and social tension. The chateau itself, with its layered additions and sumptuous interiors, becomes a symbol of aristocratic grandeur worn by time yet still alive with art, history, and cultivated taste. Through the estate's history, from Mademoiselle Laguerre's disciplined retreat to General Montcornet's forceful but difficult ownership, Balzac links private lives to the fate of the land. Around this world gather refined, uneasy figures: a woman in white, the restored pavilion at the Avonne, the harmonious household of Justin and Olympe Michaud, and the Countess de Montcornet, who senses hidden distress beneath elegant conversation. Rich in social observation and pastoral imagery, the novel is both a portrait of country life and a drama of inheritance, class conflict, and the fragile balance between beauty and decay. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
