Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Charles Dickens est né en 1812 en Angleterre. Sa carrière de romancier débuta vraiment à l'âge de vingt-quatre ans, quand il s'engagea auprès d'un éditeur à publier ses écrits sous la forme de feuilleton périodique. Son oeuvre, imprégnée par ses souvenirs d'enfance, dénonce souvent l'injustice et l'égoïsme. Ceci n'empêchera pourtant pas Charles Dickens de laisser libre court à son imagination et à sa fantaisie débordante. Un chant de Noël, publié en 1843, en est une belle illustration. William Geldart aime beaucoup les personnages et l'atmosphère des livres de Dickens. Pour illustrer ce livre, il a superposé les crayons de couleur et l'aquarelle afin d'obtenir de subtils jeux d'ombres. L'iconographie aussi riche que variée gravures, dessins d'époque, reproductions de peintures accompagnées de légendes documentaires invitent le lecteur à un extraordinaire voyage dans le temps, et permet à la fois de situer l'oeuvre et de mieux la comprendre.
