Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
Marriage in this sharp-edged social comedy is less a romance than a contract of money, status, and inheritance, and the opening preface slyly declares the book a double portrait of married life, with both men and women trapped by its demands. Caroline and Adolphe emerge not as lovers but as figures shaped by dowries, heirs, appearances, and the relentless expectations of family. Balzac's irony exposes the absurdity beneath weddings, childbirth, and domestic respectability, where every tenderness can conceal calculation and every ceremony a hidden power struggle. As the story unfolds, Caroline proves brisk, intelligent, vain, and often tactless, turning the household into her domain while leaving Adolphe exhausted by her efficiency, emotional theatrics, and social blunders. At Madame Deschars' and Madame Foullepointe's gatherings, polite society becomes a stage for double meanings, flirtation, and humiliating misunderstandings. Even illness and doctoring become comic performances, as Caroline's hypochondria and Adolphe's frustration reveal marriage as a daily negotiation between affection, vanity, and tyranny. Beneath the wit lies a darker truth: the married state steadily erodes freedom, replacing bachelor autonomy with intimate, inescapable obligation. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
