Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
In Balzac's Paz, Parisian society becomes a glittering stage where exile, vanity, and hidden loyalties collide. When the well-connected Mademoiselle du Rouvre marries Count Adam Laginski, a Polish aristocrat of uncertain standing in the capital, Balzac traces the fortunes of the du Rouvre, Ronquerolles, and Serizy families while exposing the fickleness of public opinion. Polish exiles, once admired, are turned into objects of ridicule, and Adam himself becomes both a gossip-worthy figure and a test case for how quickly money, manners, and reputation can remake a man. Against this shifting social world, Adam and his wife Clementine create a dazzling household of modern luxury, all ingenious design and cultivated excess. Yet beneath the polished surfaces, the mysterious Captain Paz exerts a hidden influence as steward, guardian, and loyal friend. A noble Pole marked by war, imprisonment, and exile, Paz is also a man in torment, secretly in love with Clementine. As her curiosity deepens and she begins to see him differently, Balzac builds a subtle drama of sacrifice, desire, and moral tension beneath the brilliance of high society. Biographie
