Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
Set in provincial France and threaded with Balzac's sharpest comic and social observations, these two tales trace the collision between local life and the restless force of Paris. The Illustrious Gaudissart offers a brilliant portrait of a traveling salesman whose charm, wit, and limitless confidence turn commerce into performance, and performance into power. First published in 1833 and later folded into Balzac's larger Comédie, it follows this "good devil" as he sells hats, fashions, insurance, and even ideas, embodying a modern world in which advertising, speculation, journalism, and persuasion blur together. The Muse of the Department, first appearing in 1843 in a more complex serialized and revised form, is a more ambitious and uneven satire of literary ambition, provincial vanity, and moral compromise. Centered on the elusive Dinah de la Baudraye and the unscrupulous journalist Lousteau, it sharpens Balzac's fascination with social types while also drawing memorable support from figures such as the honorable de Clagny and the sympathetic Bianchon. Together, the stories reveal Balzac's enduring gift for exposing vanity, wit, desire, and the uneasy commerce between Parisian sophistication and provincial society. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
