"The plot of Là-Bas concerns the novelist Durtal, who is disgusted by the emptiness and vulgarity of the modern world. He seeks relief by turning to the study of the Middle Ages and begins to research the life of the notorious 15th-century child-murderer Gilles de Rais. Through his contacts in Paris (notably Dr. Johannes, modeled after Joseph-Antoine Boullan), Durtal finds out that Satanism is not simply a thing of the past but alive in turn of the century France. He embarks on an investigation of the occult underworld with the help of his lover Madame Chantelouve. The novel culminates with a description of a black mass. C’est en 1905, soit deux ans avant la mort de Huysmans, que paraissent Trois Primitifs: Les Grünewald du Musée de Colmar. Le Maître de Flémalle et la Florentine du Musée de Francfort-sur-le-Mein. Le texte intégral, non réédité depuis près de quarante ans, est composé de deux parties sensiblement équivalentes: d’abord la description du Retable d’Issenheim de Mathias Grünewald exposé au musée Unterlinden de Colmar, puis celle de deux autres œuvres découvertes au Musée Staedel de Francfort-sur-le-Mein: un buste anonyme d’une jeune fille de l’École Florentine du XVe siècle et La Madone allaitant l’Enfant Jésus du maître de Flémalle.
