Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
In the glittering society of Genoa, where French wit, diplomatic elegance, and aristocratic polish mask private unrest, Camille Maupin moves through a salon of artists, critics, and nobles with commanding intelligence and fame. Her presence sharpens attention on the city's most enigmatic couple: the handsome French Consul-General and his sculptural, beautiful wife, Onorina Pedrotti, whose wealth and status conceal a marriage shadowed by secrecy, melancholy, and unspoken history. Around them, gossip, morality, and the double standards of society collide in a drawing-room debate that exposes how easily women are judged and men excused. When the Consul-General begins to tell his own story, the novel shifts into a portrait of youth, ambition, and wounded devotion. Raised in strict piety by a devoted uncle, he enters public life with literary hunger, romantic fantasies, and a longing for independence, only to become the servant of the powerful Comte Octave. That world of rank and restraint leads to the central tragedy: Octave's obsessive love for his estranged wife Honorine, his secret efforts to support her, and his desperate, often elaborate attempts to win back a woman who believes herself independent and lost to him forever. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
