Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
Parisian commerce becomes a dazzling theater of persuasion, where luxury, spectacle, and social energy all serve the art of selling. Balzac celebrates the shopkeeper and commercial traveler as performers who thrive behind the counter, using wit, tact, and instinct to guide even the most hesitant customer, as in the anecdote of a prince and two duchesses turned toward choice by a single well-placed question. From there, the shop emerges as a stage for a subtle contest between women and salesmen, each side testing charm, intelligence, and manipulation. Balzac sketches assistants of different types, carefully matched to different customers, while the department head stands as the master strategist who keeps the whole machine moving. Architecture, lighting, display, and interior arrangement are all enlisted to seduce the eye and inflate desire, transforming the store itself into a tool of commerce. With satirical precision, the passage shows salespeople reading a woman's taste, class, and vulnerability from the smallest details, especially in the bewildering world of shawl shopping. Biographie
