Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
On a New Year's Day walk through Paris, Count Andrea Marcosini, a handsome, self-conscious Milanese aristocrat, is drawn from elegant boredom into an impulsive pursuit of a poorly dressed woman in a shabby street. What begins as a moment of curiosity quickly becomes obsession, exposing the novel's rich interplay of vanity, desire, class division, and romantic illusion. Balzac turns Andrea's restless chase into a sharp social and psychological study, set against the stark contrast between Parisian luxury and urban poverty. The trail leads Andrea to a humble Italian boarding house and into the lives of Marianna Gambara and her husband, Paolo, a gifted but impoverished composer whose genius has brought him ridicule, hardship, and domestic sacrifice. There he meets the lively cook Giardini, whose comic vanity and worldly commentary reveal a household of struggling artists, idealists, and dreamers living on the edge of ruin. As Andrea grows increasingly fascinated by Marianna's dignity and suffering, and sympathetic to Gambara's misunderstood talent, Balzac builds a story of artistic ambition, marital devotion, and the dangerous power of idealized love. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
