Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
In wartime Paris, Edith Wharton turns observation into a sharp cultural portrait of France, asking what gives the nation its enduring force and why its spirit mattered so deeply in an age of upheaval. French Ways and Their Meaning is less a narrative than a series of essays, each one probing a different facet of French life: first impressions, reverence, taste, intellectual honesty, continuity, and the changing role of women in modern France. With wit and precision, Wharton compares French and Anglo-Saxon temperaments, arguing that France is shaped by clarity, discipline, realism, and a long civilization that prizes intellect and inherited achievement over illusion. From the comedy of blackberry taboos and the intricate etiquette of dinner conversation to reflections on prehistoric cave art, she shows how custom, art, and manners reveal a people's deepest values. France emerges as a civilization of continuity, rooted in land, family, and tradition, yet alive to modern change. Its caution, thrift, patience, and resistance to shortcuts are presented not as weakness but as the hard-earned habits of a culture that reveres the past while preserving its creative vitality. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
