Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
In a damp, narrow street of old Paris, Caroline Crochard and her aging mother live in a room so poor it is both workshop and refuge, where embroidery, firelight, and endurance define their days. Caroline's quiet beauty and cheerful labor draw the eye of a somber stranger in black, and across the winter months their brief, wordless exchanges grow into a tender, intimate bond shaped by longing, class difference, and the hope of rescue. When the family's debt and desperation become impossible to ignore, the Gentleman in Black secretly helps them, only to vanish as spring returns. A later carriage outing to Montmorency brings Caroline and the stranger closer still, softening his reserve and awakening feeling amid the promise of the countryside. But the story darkens with Madame Crochard's final confession and deathbed secrets, where piety, greed, and hidden inheritance struggle for control. The narrative then widens into imperial Paris, where young lawyer de Granville is drawn into political patronage and a marriage arranged for advantage, revealing a society ruled by ambition, money, and social calculation. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
Biographie
