Ce qu’en dit l’éditeur
Balzac's Paris is a glittering marketplace of wit, debt, and disguise, and few figures embody it better than the lorette: charming, fashionable, and always one step from ruin. At a Carnival dinner hosted by the notary Cardot, lawyers, journalists, artists, and aristocrats trade jokes over cigars and unpaid bills, turning conversation into a fierce satire of a city where credit, reputation, and survival are inseparable. From that social whirl emerges a darker anatomy of Parisian opportunism. The elegant but predatory Maxime de Trailles, the shifting schemer Claparon, and the streetwise collector Cerizet move through politics, journalism, speculation, and prison with equal adaptability, buying bad debts and profiting from other people's desperation. Their clashes expose a world in which manners are weapons and every transaction hides a trap. The intrigue widens through Antonia Chocardelle's reading-room, where romance, vanity, and business blur together. As Croizeau courts her and Denisart guards his money, legal maneuvering becomes another form of combat. In the end, Balzac delivers a comic reversal in which Maxime's confidence is undone by Cerizet's cunning, and the city's schemers are left confronting the consequences of their own games. Biographie
